The project

The Garrison Crossing (formerly named Fort York Pedestrian and Cycle Bridge), located in downtown Toronto, creates a vital connection between Stanley Park in the north and the Garrison Common of the Fort York grounds in the south and fosters stronger community networks in and around the City, Fort York and waterfront. The crossing includes two Duplex stainless steel bridges over rail corridors. The bridges form an important pedestrian and cyclist link to the Waterfront that also connects three parks – Ordnance Park, South Stanley Park with the Fort York neighbourhood.

Construction started in August 2016. The two bridge structures were hoisted into place by a 660-ton crawler crane in the summer and fall of 2018 and were completed in October 2019.

The construction has been awarded twice :

2019 Award of excellence – Bridge category. Ontario Steel Design Awards. Canadian Institute of Steel Construction.

2020 Award of design excellence. Association of Canadian Consulting Engineers.

The project represented an unprecedented technical innovation in North America: the use of Duplex stainless-steel on the entire structure. This pioneering use of a forefront technology provides premium aesthetics within a unique setting in addition to a safe and durable asset for the community. The structure has a longer life cycle, is more corrosion-resistant and requires less maintenance, reducing its overall cost.

Industeel is proud to have participated by the supply of Duplex UR2205 plates and technical assistance for this awsome project.
